Position

  • Reports to the Director, Policy, Advocacy and Communications (PAC).

Company

  • The organization represents Canadian municipal governments' interests on policy and program matters with federal jurisdiction.
  • Its members include Canada's largest cities, small urban and rural communities and the 17 major provincial and territorial municipal associations.
  • One of the most influential policy-making and advocacy groups in the country, helping to stage the municipal New Deal and focusing attention on the critical needs of Canada's municipalities.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage intergovernmental relations and advocate policy positions to the federal government.
  • Identify policy priorities, emerging issues and trends and develop effective strategies in response.
  • Advise the Director of PAC and oversee the work and professional development of the policy team.
  • Research and write policy position papers, particularly in the area or economic policy, as well as oversee the policy and research and writing of team members.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and a number of its committees to define policy issues and help them determine the organization's positions.
  • Part of PAC management.

Profile:

  • A post-graduate university degree in economics or public administration combined with extensive experience both as a professional and as a manager in policy development and advocacy organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both as a team member and a team builder, harnessing ability and enthusiasm to achieve results.
  • Strong writing skills in both English and French.
  • A team player with leadership and project management skills.
  • Can identify priorities and move issues forward.
  • Can react quickly to sudden changes in the environment and in organizational priorities.
  • Experience in the political process, whether at the federal, provincial or municipal level is an asset, especially in dealing directly with elected officials.
